Data Warehouse

What is a data warehouse?

A data warehouse (DW, DWH, EDW) is a system which is used to organise raw data for reporting and data analysis. These are central repositories of integrated data collected from more than one source. Current and historical data are stored in an organised format in a single database (data warehouse). This database is used to prepare analytical reports. The data stored in the warehouse is uploaded to the data warehouse from various sources. The data are then organised (periods unchanged) and converted (e.g. kg into tonnes) into a comparable form to ensure that the data are presented with the correct quality before being used for reporting. The collection, cleansing, and reporting of data is done automatically according to predefined rules.

The EFWIA’s data warehouse project

The purpose of establishing the Estonian Forest and Wood Industries Association data warehouse is to consolidates data of interest to members of the EFWIA related to forestry and the wood industry. The data warehouse project is coordinated by the EFWIA’s  Statistics Working Group.

1. Aggregation of data in the data warehouse (the cloud).

Version 1.0 of the project consolidates/links the following data from different sources in the data warehouse:

  • Price information on forest and wood products (RMK, Private Forest, Luke)
  • Production volumes of wood products (Statistics Estonia)
  • Foreign Trade (Statistics Estonia)
  • Economic information on the sector (Tax and Customs Board)

In the future, the volume of data aggregated in the data warehouse may be supplemented. Further information of interest to stakeholders in the forest and wood industry sector will be added.

2. Display, consumption, and analysis of data.

Access to data organised by the EFWIA is planned through two channels in the first phase. The data warehouse will display automatically updated data in an organised format on the EFWIA’s website. The EFWIA is responsible for the accuracy of the data automatically gathered from different sources and published on its website/channels. In this way, the Association will become the central collector, publisher, and auditor of sector statistics.

Contracted partners of the EFWIA have direct access to querying organised raw data in the EFWIA’s data warehouse. Companies that have built up a data warehouse from the various databases in their company can query the EFWIA’s data warehouse for, e.g. RMK price information, and compare it with the purchase prices from their own company’s data warehouse on one graph. Corresponding software is used to analyse such information obtained from different data warehouses. The following are the most commonly used business analytics software programmes: TableauMicrosoft PowerBIQlik. At the same time, it is also possible to directly interface the organised and audited information from the EFWIA’s database into the company’s information systems.

In order to create the EFWIA’s data warehouse project, the working group met with companies (DatafruitAvalanceWizon). that have created data warehouses for various Estonian forestry enterprises. The best offer for creating the EFWIA’s data warehouse was submitted by Datafruit.

Data sources

The Estonian Forest and Wood Industries Association works together with a variety of organisations to obtain data related to the forest and wood industry sectors. The main cooperation partner in collecting data is Statistics Estonia.

Statistics Estonia

In Statistics Estonia, the collection of data on forestry and the timber industry is split between specialists in different fields. If you have a question or a problem with the quality of the data, you can submit it, either directly or through a representative of the Association, to a specialist in the corresponding field at Statistics Estonia.
