The European Confederation of Woodworking Industries, in cooperation with associations in Canada, the United States, New Zealand, and Australia, created an International Wood Manifesto that highlights the important role of wood in addressing the world’s climate challenges. The Estonian Forest and Wood Industries Association has signed the manifesto on behalf of Estonia. Henrik Välja, Managing Director of the Estonian Forest and Wood Industries Association, noted that in 2020 the Estonian wood industry became the biggest exporter of wooden houses and buildings in Europe. However, in addition to strong economic results, he says that wooden architecture is also being actively developed in Estonia, with the construction of Estonia’s first wooden apartment building now under way after a pause of almost 100 years.
Meeting climate targets is a challenge we all share, and here too the wood industries sector offers solutions that work.
Even so, the wood industries sector has its own carbon footprint, which AFRY (formerly Pöyry) – the renowned Finnish consulting firm specialised in energy, industry and engineering solutions – has been studying since 2021. The report will be available in the first half of 2022, and will be published on the EFWIA’s website.
The future development of the sector can be ensured with the presence of qualified specialists; Helping to ensure the quality and quantity of forest and wood education is one of the Association’s priorities. To this end, we contribute to the preparation of curricula and syllabuses, and to the development of professional activities.
